Exploring Safety and Reliability: Open Source Hypervisor on FPGA

Type of work:

Master Thesis

Assignment:

In this work, a virtualization solution for shared hardware resources on FPGAs based on open source hypervisor systems shall be developed, implemented, and evaluated. Based on literature review and preliminary results an appropriate system concept shall be sketched and implemented on a Zynq Zybo Z7 development board. The final system shall be evaluated with respect to safety, reliability, and performance and the results shall be documented.

Skills:
  • Computer architectures
  • C / C++ programming
  • Hardware development
  • Linux-kernel and virtualization know-how

Background:

Virtualization is a key concept for saving hardware resources and costs by consolidating multiple services on shared hardware platforms. Although virtualiation is already very common in data center and standard CPU architectures, it is still a hot topic in the domains of FPGAs (in particular with custom hardware architectures) and real-time systems.
