Design and Implementation of a Customizable Smart Home Controller with Display

This project aims to develop, implement, and evaluate a flexible and expandable control center for smart home applications. To this end, a suitable microcontroller platform will be identified and selected. Based on available open-source frameworks, a generic controller architecture with a human-machine interface on a display will be developed, implemented, and evaluated. The system will be integrated into existing systems via standardized smart home protocols. Finally, the entire system will be tested and evaluated against defined application scenarios.

Background:

One of the biggest challenges in building automation is the mismatch between prospective usage periods of buildings (in general > 30 years) and the fast progress in information and embedded technology used for building sensing, control, and intelligence (mostly < 5 years lifetime).

Open source technologies and standards can help to bridge this gap by making technologies, interfaces, and applications transparent and maintainable by a growing community. KNX is one of the most popular building automation standards. However, although this standard is open, a proprietary management software (ETS) is required for provisioning KNX devices. Another modern and open standard is Matter that is currently supported by a large number of recent smart home devices and ecosystems.
