A Connected Sensor Node for Building Automation

Type of work:

Master Thesis

Assignment:

In this work, an open sensor node platform for various building automation standards shall be developed, implemented, and evaluated. The node shall support MQTT, Matter, and KNX. The system is implemented on an ESP32 platform with open libraries and tool chains and shall provide communication interfaces to various sensor types. The whole node is evaluated in a test environment regarding its functionality, robustness, and energy / performance metrics.

Skills:
  • C/C++ development
  • Network and bus technologies
  • Compiler and build tool chains

Background:

Building automation is a key requirement for energy-aware and flexible building usage. Although various proprietary (and non-interoperable) standards exist, only KNX is currently widely-spread as a vendor-independent (but not open) standard. Matter, a fully open and cryptographically secured standard based on IP, is currently evolving and becomes more wide-spread. However, frameworks and system platforms supporting multiple standards are currently very rare and designing multi-standard systems is a complex and time-consuming task.
