The impact of uncertainty on real-time control system implementations

Cyber-physical systems rely on complex control software whose execution and synchronisation directly influence the behaviour of the associated physical processes. In practice, the presence of uncertainty caused by time-varying delays, packet losses, or jitter has a significant impact on the performance of the control system. We present a framework for modelling these sources of uncertainty and analysing their effects on the dynamics of the closed-loop system. Our approach makes it possible to certify stability and quantify performance, providing a basis for optimising real-time implementation parameters.
