SmartSCADA for Transport and Distribution Grids

Motivation

The fast growing share of renewable dispersed generation (DG) units is a challenge for medium and low voltage network operators. On the one hand they are obliged to integrate these units into their network and on the other hand they have to maintain continuous network operation and a standard power quality at the same time. In future it will be necessary to have information about the relevant operation values and especially about the node voltages with magnitude and phase as this allows the intervention in a regulatory way regarding the network operation.

In high voltage networks the deployment of meters at each network node has been common practice for decades. To monitor and to control these networks scada systems are used successfully. Because of the high number of network nodes, loads and generators this method is far too expensive in medium and low voltage networks. This is why new methods to estimate the state of the system have to be developed.

Task

In this project two objectives are defined:

  • Development, test and implementation of a method that returns comparable information about the system state of a medium or low voltage network. This state will be determined by a state estimation method and the linkage of data from existing smart meter infrastructures, DG forecasts and scada values of higher network levels.
  • Development and test of algorithms to detect topology errors in medium and low voltage networks.

Approach

The first step is to determine the basic requirements for the Smart scada system. Then a field campaign follows. Here, time series for different network quantities will be recorded. These time series provide the basis for the development of the new state estimation algorithm. Additionally different mathematical models describing the behavior of residual loads, the calculation of synthetic samples based on weather forecasts and load profiles, and the behavior of real loads and generation units will be developed, too. The state estimator will finally have algorithms which converge reliably even at low redundancies and high uncertainties. Furthermore they are able to detect “bad data” and topology errors sufficiently. The last step is the implementation of the method into a scada prototype and the final tests.
