Course description:

The modern society is characterized by increasing automation degree, not only in industrial production plants (e.g. Industry 4.0) but also in everyday life (e.g. automated driving, smart home/building). To guarantee the correct functioning of such automation systems and to avoid accidents, it is important to detect faults in the system automatically in an early phase. That is why fault diagnosis and process monitoring is one of the essential parts in modern automation systems.

Based on our rich experience in this research area, this lecture aims to introduce basic principles and different approaches to fault diagnosis of dynamic systems. Moreover, we shall also focus on the design of fault tolerant controllers. The methods that are used to locate the necessity of fault diagnosis, such as fault tree analysis, failure modes and effect analysis, risk based maintenance, will also be presented. Both theoretical analysis and industrial application examples will be covered in the lecture.

Main content

  • Introduction to fault diagnosis (FD) and fault tolerant control (FTC)
  • Fault analysis methods
  • Model-based fault diagnosis approaches
  • Data-driven fault diagnosis approaches
  • Fault tolerant control
  • Plant asset Management.
