Introduction to the Academic Scientific Publication Process SoSe26
 

General Course Information:

The overall goal of this course to develop familiarity with the overall process of academic scientific publication. This course therefore focuses on both the researcher focused and publication-outlet focused activities that are involved in publishing a scientific contribution by the researcher to an publication outlet.

The course will take place in the following phases:

  1.  Registration phase: You must register for the course and express interest for a topic from the ones provided. It is also an option to suggest a topic yourself. Your interest will be taken into consideration for topic assignment.
  2. Topic phase: A topic will be assigned to you, taking your interest into consideration. You will be given an overview of the overall academic scientific publication process and hints on how to effectively read a paper.
  3. Literature and conference discovery phase: you will learn how to do a literature search, how to keep track of the papers you read and structure the literature into a survey. You will do a brief literature search with hints and guidance from us. You will informally present what you found, we expect interesting discussions around them in the group. Further, you will learn how to select relevant and appropriate publication outlets for your topic.
  4. Reviewing phase: you will get an overview of the review process and to simulate the activities of a program committee for a conference, you will write review reports for some papers provided to you and then discuss the merits of the paper with the group.
  5. Publication phase: you will learn how to write a paper and to give a scientific presentation. You will use what you have learned to write a summary paper based on your topic and make a presentation based on your literature search.
     

Registration & Topic Assignment

  • Due to limited places, it is mandatory to register for the course to access all available course information.
  • Please express interest for your preferred topics, Deadline: 16.04.2026, 10:00. This step will confirm your commitment to undertaking this course.
  • Take your interest into consideration, while selecting the topic. Topics are assigned on a first come first serve basis.
  • The Kick-off meeting for the course will be on 16.04.2026, 11:00. Attendance is mandatory.
  • Do use the OLAT forum for questions and discussion.
  • This course runs in parallel with the course "RTS Seminar SoSe 2026". It is possible to take up both courses simultaneously. In that case, the course registration, expression of interest for topics and other steps have to be carried out on both OLAT pages.
     

Meetings

There will be a regular meeting every or every other week, depending on the agenda and the estimated effort of the current action item. The course "Introduction to the Academic Scientific Publication Process"  will also consist of lectures to provide you with an overview and hints on the topics relevant to each phase. Attendance for meetings and lectures is mandatory.
